Art online: about me

If you’re looking to buy art online, welcome to my art journey! I’m Ursula G, and my art aspires to bring frequencies of colour and poetry into your space, releasing joy, serenity, and contemplation.

Early life and Inspiration

Born to a deeply spiritual mother and a delightfully eccentric father, my formative years on a farm in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) were filled with nature and creativity. My classroom was the woods where I roamed with my pets, drawing and writing stories. These adventures, combined with radio stories as part of home-schooling, nurtured a rich imagination.

At age 8, we moved to Kimberley, South Africa, known for it’s “Big Hole.” The Karoo’s unique beauty influenced me deeply. My art teacher Miss Laubser, instilled in me a passion for art with her unconventional methods and unforgettable motto: “Be bloody bold and resolute.” Yearly family trips to places like Mozambique, Durban and the South Coast further enriched my artistic inspiration.

My artist’s journey

I briefly attended Cape Town’s University’s Michaelis Art School, before opting for the ‘School of Life’. After working in Technical Design, I devoted myself to raising my two children while enduring a challenging marriage. During this time living in the picturesque Cape Town, I sought the deeper meaning of ‘inspiration’: ‘breathing in the Life of the Name.’

Teaching and Personal Life

Inspired by my children’s Montessori education, I taught for 27 years. During this time I also presented adult and children’s art workshops throughout the Cape Peninsula and the West Coast of South Africa. I retired in 2018, and now enjoy a blissful marriage in Pringle Bay, a seaside village near Cape Town, with our pets.

Artist Statement

As an artist, I find joy in the endless possibilities offered by experimenting with various media. From sketching to sculpture, from encaustic and mixed media, each medium brings its own unique challenges and opportunities. My creative process is guided by an intuitive approach, allowing each piece to evolve organically, often through layers of exploration.

I am drawn to the intricacies of the human form, capturing its essence through figures and portraits. Water, with its fluidity and transformative power, frequently finds its way into my work, expressing the Mystical nature of our existence. Patterns, whether subtle or bold, weave through my creations, adding depth and texture to the narrative.

In my artistic journey, I am continually inspired by the interplay between spontaneity and structure, embracing the unknown while honoring the craftsmanship inherent in each piece. Through my art, I strive to evoke emotion, provoke thought, and invite viewers into a dialogue with the profound and the ephemeral.
